Eye Infection

An infection in your eye can show up in many different ways. It's important to get medical help if you think you may have the infection, as your vision could be at risk if it's not treated.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Itchy eyes
  • Feeling that something’s on or in your eye
  • Eye hurts when it’s bright (light sensitivity)
  • Burning in your eyes
  • Small, painful lump under your eyelid or at the base of your eyelashes
  • Eyelid is tender when you touch it
  • Eyes won’t stop tearing up
  • Irritation in your eyes

Treatment at home

  • Antiviral eyedrops or ointment
  • Steroid eyedrops
  • Antiviral tablets

 

When should I book a GP?

  • You have any of these symptoms to enable treatment.

 

Seek urgent medical review if:

  • You are a contact lens wearer
  • You have a pain in your eye
  • You have a change to your vision
